Vitamin B12 reduces cardiovascular risksAssociation of MTHFR C677T, MTHFRA1298C, and MTRRA66G Gene Polymorphisms with Hyperhomocysteinemia and Its Modulation by the Combined Effect of Vitamin B12 and Folate in Chinese Population with Hypertension.
Moderate relevance to findings
We explored the connection between vitamin B12, genetic factors, and cardiovascular health in a group of Chinese adults suffering from hypertension. By analyzing the genetic variations of individuals, we aimed to understand how these may influence levels of homocysteine, an amino acid that can impact heart health when present in high amounts.
Our study included 1,304 participants over the age of 18. We measured their serum levels of vitamin B12 and folate, as well as their total homocysteine concentrations. The findings were quite significant: adequate levels of both vitamin B12 and folate were linked to lower homocysteine levels. This suggests that ensuring proper nutrition might be key to managing cardiovascular risks associated with high homocysteine.
We also noticed that the genotypic effects on homocysteine levels could be lessened with sufficient intake of these vitamins. Targeted nutritional interventions, such as increasing vitamin B12 and folate in the diet, could therefore play an essential role in heart health for those at risk. Our results emphasize the importance of nutrition in supporting cardiovascular health and managing hypertension.

Vitamin deficiencies affect blood pressureThe impact of folic acid/VB12 deficiency on essential hypertension in children and adolescents: from a nested case-control and a cohort study.
Significant findings on hypertension
We set out to understand how serum folic acid (FA) and vitamin B12 (VB12) levels relate to elevated blood pressure in children and adolescents. Our research included both a nested case-control and a cohort study, focusing on participants from primary schools. We observed that participants with elevated blood pressure had notably lower levels of folic acid and vitamin B12 compared to those with normal blood pressure.
Moreover, these children also had higher levels of homocysteine, a substance that can be harmful in excessive amounts. Among those who were overweight and obese, we found that those with high blood pressure had even lower levels of folic acid. The data suggested a significant connection: higher levels of folic acid were associated with better blood pressure outcomes, and this relationship remained even after accounting for vitamin B12 and homocysteine levels.
Additionally, our cohort study highlighted that both systolic and diastolic blood pressure measurements were lower in children with high folic acid exposure compared to those with low exposure. Overall, our findings indicated that deficiencies in folic acid and vitamin B12 during childhood can contribute to elevated blood pressure, potentially influencing cardiovascular health. Therefore, it's important to ensure adequate intake of these vitamins, either through diet or supplementation.
